hi,

UC00A can be used to interface Xbee to computer with XCTU software.

refer user manual of xbee, page 7

• Minimum connections: VCC, GND, DOUT & DIN
• Minimum connections for updating firmware: VCC, GND, DIN, DOUT, RTS & DTR

so depending whether u will like to do some firmware update onot, if yes, then u will connect it the 2nd way so that we can communicate and also update the firmware.

be careful doing the connections, make sure of 3.3V, becoz xbee modules operate at 3.3V, set the jumper at UC00A to 3.3V and u might wan to do some protection with small value of resistors.

I think the hard part will be the level shifter between 5V and 3.3V. To get 3.3V power you can use 3.3V voltage regulator, but for signal, it might be more complex. Try to google and see is there any solution?
