Supporting Arduino WiFi library with ESP8266 Shield

Are there any plans to revamp the ESP8266 Shield library to conform to the Arduino standard WiFi library (https://www.arduino.cc/en/Reference/WiFi)? It would help greatly when using libraries like ezTime (https://github.com/ropg/ezTime) that expect the Arduino WiFi interface.
