Which one you want to apply sleep mode? The microcontroller or RTC chip? If microcontroller it is possible, if RTC chip I'm not sure because RTC need always run to maintain time and date.

You can make the device continuously sleep and wakes up either when interrupted or the time has reached. Then do anything you want to do. After that sleep again and wait for the next interrupt. Its also possible vice versa. just call the sleep function or set the associated register.
