Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager. Now plug in the Arduino to your USB port. Did you see a new COM port appears in Ports (COM & LPT)?

Dear All,
I have the same problem. I have gone through a few tutorials and my laptop still cannot recognise the board.
I have an Arduino Uno. I have managed to confirm that the USB comm port is Com3 which shows in the Device Hardware.
The problem is when I start up the IDE, there is no board listed in "Tools > Board>".
ny help would be much appreciated.
Regards.

Can both of you print screen your Device Manager windows together with the Arduino COM port displayed? It may helps us to find out the problem.

Try to use a desktop or other brands of USB-serial converter. Some of the converter doesnt seems to work properly =)

Hi Sich,
Attached is the screenshot. Could it be that the bootloader is missing ?

I don think is due to bootloader. It seem your computer does not detect the USB to UART chip on Arduino board at all. Are you sure it is plug in?

Yes, it is plugged in. When I disconnect the cable, the Device Manager refreshes, the Com3 does not show anymore. When I connect it again, Com3 appears again.
