Solar charger shield v2.2

Hi,
I am currently doing a small personal project involving a solar charger shield v2.2, a battery and a solar panel.
I wanted to implement the basic behavior of lighting a LED when the battery reaches a critical voltage level such that the user knows if he has to charge the battery using the microUSB plug.
Sounds as an easy problem but I do not find any built-in feature to simply measure this voltage. I read about shorting the R7 resistance of the shield on the wiki of the product but this does not give me exactly what I want (as I understood seeing the result I got with implementing this circuit, it shows the relative amount of voltage generated by the solar panel or something similar).

Anyway, does anyone know how to simply measure this voltage with this shield or do I have to solder cables directly from the battery ans use a tension divider bridge ?

Thanks in advance for your time.
