If potentiometer is not that perfect, then what are the other options, a shaft encoder??

well, it depends on your target and objective. If you are planning to do a XY table for demo and short term usage, the conventional potentiometer is sufficient. If you plan to create a XY table for long hour operation, you need to source for better quality potentiometer.

Another concern is the interface to potentiometer. The potentiometer that we use in PR24 is 10 turns, and this might not be enough for XY table as the distance is quite long.

Rotary encoder is one of the options, but it will cost you a lot.

Still, you will need to study more.

This xy table is only for short term usage...it is my project in uni...then I guess potentiometer should be sufficient for my need.
You mean the 10 turn potentiometer is not enough, can I know the reason??
The area of my xy table wil be around 75cm*75cm, and I am using timing belt pulley and timing belt to drive it...
