PIC Programmer...

Postby krool » Sat May 07, 2011 11:52 am

Hi there guys,

sorry if this is a really noob question. im just a long time hobbist...
just open back my pandora box of PICs hehe for a small time project.
n found out b4 this i just use my uni programmer (about 7 years ago) to burn the bootloader...

so, now im back into the bisnes n outdated, so really need ur guys views n help... for which programmer should i go for...
mostly b4 this i just use my uni programmer to program the bootloader firmware n stock my pic. n the stock is now all gone.
n another thing im familiar with pic16f877a but looking forward for the 18f families or any other suggestion :)

The Option is,
1.PICkit3 = rm179.00
2.USB ICSP PIC Programmer V2010 + 40 pins PIC Start-Up Kit Combo 1 = rm106.80
3.USB ICSP PIC Programmer V2010 + ICSP Programmer Socket = rm 70.90 plus postage charges.

which one should i go for for Option 1 or Option 2? its rm70 in different, does the PICKit3 justify the different in price?
Or Option 3, yeah its the cheapest, but will the next stage be easy? n the postage charges?

really hope u guys can help me...
so that i can place my order ASAP... :)
u guys understand right, when we want to do something we to do it right away...hehe

thanks in advance...

I propose USB ICSP RM50.90. This is PICkit2 equivalent. I don't know what more on PICkit3, but since PICkit2 still can works for PIC16 and PIC18.

hi,

i think it depends on wat the needs, u will need to program PIC32?
if not then i think UIC00B is enough for most PIC16F 18F and dsPIC.
u try to check the compability for PICs, then compare with those u will use, then u will know whether u need a PICkit3 onot.
UIC00B or pickit2 equivalent has more functions than just a programmer as discussed in previous volume of robot head2toe magazine from cytron. it can be logic analyzer, uart tool, etc. whilst PICkit 3 i dont see there is a standalone software to support this yet. mayb in future.

I you dont need to program the latest chip from microchip, that is from Sept 2010 onwards, pickit 2 is good enough. :)

If you dont need it that urgently and willing to wait, you can buy the original pickit 3 at 50% off ^^

The Pickit 3 requires a seperate software, and I heard that it's embedded in the MPLAB IDE for some strange reason.

You will like the Pickit 2 clone from Cytron. :)
PIC - UIC00B from Cytron (replacement for my broken PICKit 2), Pickit 3, MikroC for PIC
dsPIC - MikroC for dsPIC, mikromedia board (dsPIC33)
AVR - AVR Dragon
Parallax - Prop tool

50% off sound very nice :) so, it will be just around rm90... when is it???
so, will it be worth it?

I want to vote for shahrul's recommendation but it's not available at your polls :P
Actually you don't need anything else such as the programming socket if you're using ICSP. An UIC00B is enough. Just extend the ICSP pins to a connector to program the chip plugged on the board using UIC00B.

The PICkit 2 will be the best option and it's cheaper. If you need debugging, get the Pickit 3.
