If the backlite of your 16x2 LCD or GLCD is faulty. Is it possible to repair/replace it or just throw it away and buy a new one?
Where can you get these backlight items?

I have a Yamaha GLCD 240 x 220 with a faulty backlite. The whole thing costs RM370 (LCD+backlite). Can someone suggest a cheaper way to repair it? It works on +5V in series with a 25 ohm resistor. Has anyone tried with a few white LEDs in place of the backlite?

I've never done that. Can try to remove the backlight but keep the white screen. Usually the backlight has a piece of white screen to even the light source, but not all are removable though. Then solder the smd leds at the corners/edges, focus to the center of the lcd. Or may be place the some smd leds in grid under the lcd screen.

Thanks kl84. I'll try it out with a used text LCD that came without backlte and put some SMD LED underneath. But first I have to savage some LED from used printer PCB.

Will post here if it works.
