i would like to find a sensor which i called it as surface sensor. let's say i fix the sensor at the corner of a table and randomly put an object on the table, then the sensor can sense the object in between 0 to 90 or 180 degree and tell me the coordinate of the object. is there have such sensor?

Maybe you need this:
Laser Range Finder

I think this one is quite suitable for your application because of its small form factor: HOKUYO URG Laser Range Finder 4m (New)

i plan to use the sensor in my college final year project. i think the sensor you recommended is too expensive for me. other than this, is there any sensor can be the replacement and the price is not too expensive and affordable?

A webcam and lotsa coding to track the object using image processing...

i plan to do some sort like touch pad or keyboard so i need the sensor which can sense coordinate (X, Y).
can camera and lotsa coding do this?
