Current Sense Breakout Board ACS712

Postby syafiq hashim » Wed Dec 21, 2011 12:23 am

Current Sense Breakout Board
Product Code : SN-ACS712

can this sensor sense current up to 60A?
is the output can be deliver directly into PIC 16F877A?

my project require to sense current directly at power distribution board (single phase building). so the AC current as the input will be sense by this sensor, and the output of the sensor will be deliver into PIC.

ACS712 zero crossing at 2.5V. Output sensitivity is 66 to 185 mV/A. I not see the maximum output voltage of this sensor.
Assume it can goes from 0-5V, take the one 66mV/A, so 2.5V / 66mV/A = 37A. But I think it can't measure up to 37A.

Suggestion, you can use current transformer SCT-013, can measure up to 100A. You can find at ebay.

The bigger cousins of ACS712 can go up to +/- 100A. The sensitivity is 20mV/A. Take a look at their datasheet here.

Allegro MicroSystems - 50 to 200 A Integrated Conductor Sensor ICs

They do offer samples and you can try writing to them as a Uni student. I once wrote them on behalf of my company and they did give me 1 or 2 pieces for experiments.

I checked with eBay for this item. Very well designed and dont have to break the AC connections. Unfortunately, all the sellers dont ship the item to Malaysia. May be has something to do with stealing electricity from Tenaga Malaysia that all addon to power lines are illegal and not allowed.

I already have one SCT-013. My friend bought this.
I'm not use this because my previous project just detect small AC current <10A.
