OK, I cannot see your photo or attachment, but base on the title and your question on NPN and PNP, I guess it should be this SN-KC1816-KP2, right?

My understanding, NPN is Open drain collector and NO is Normally Open, means the transistor is open by default. PNP is the kind of opposite and NC again is opposite of NO which is Normally Close.

I think that sensor is giving you 2 options to interface to your controller. Using NPN is easier. Try to connect the necessary voltage, 12 to 24V to the correct pin, Brown (+) and Blue (-), connect a resistor of let say 10K to NPN output pin (Black) and another terminal of resistor to 5V on Arduino. And that black pin also connect to any arduino digital pin which you have configure as input.
