what type of sensor is suitable for counting number of people in a hall?

its hard. the best sensor is to use human eyes & and human brain as processor.

pls be more specific, are the people in the hall moving? static? u will need image processing?

Yup, is not easy. The best sensor would be human eyes :) Even human cannot correctly count number of people a room, right?
