Detecting the utrasonic wave from the ultrasonic sensor

Postby darkconvoy » Mon May 26, 2014 4:07 pm

Does anyone know how to detect or measure the strength of the ultrasonic wave that an ultrasonic sensor uses?

Most of ultrasonic sensor module uses microcontroller which already process all the ultrasonic wave signals and convert it to data for distance measurement only.

Anyway I can measure the strength of the ultrasonic wave produced or returned?

What do u meant by strength? The amplitude? U can measure it by connecting the output of ultrasound receiver to oscilloscope and measure the amplitude

Yes, I mean the amplitude of the sensor as it travels for certain distance from the sensor

I need to check the amplitude of the ultrasonic wave from the ultrasonic sensor to see the difference of it after travelling certain distance. The detector/meter has to be placed at the opposite side of the sensor.

U can start by detecting the wave using oscilloscope first. Just hook up the ultrasond receiver to oscilloscope and U can measure the signal amplitude. Make sure the transmitter is transmitting at resonance frequency, 40khz is very common transducer. If U need to measure using microcontroller U will need amplify the signal using op amp as amplifier. The U can read the amplitude using ADC.

OK. How can you get data for something similar to the image attached? It is in the datasheet of HC-SR04 Ultrasonic sensor

normally we get that characterization only from datasheet of the sensor. not so sure what is the exact and accurate way for doing that, mayb u can get some info from searching and share with us?
however, easy way to do that is just doing plot of amplitude of the received ultrasound on every degree of angle centered at the US transmiter. just use an osccilloscope to read out the amplitude on receiver side.
