Reading GPS data from SKM53 via Arduino Uno

Postby yzh2205 » Fri Feb 06, 2015 11:53 am

So I got this SKM53 GPS starter kits and is trying to integrate it via Arduino to read the GPS data.
I have tried connecting the starter kits RX and TX pin according to the link below. but I only manage to get 0.00 on both Lat and Long
http://www.fut-electronics.com/wp-conte ... 20code.pdf

I also try directly connect to the GPS module instead of through the starter kits, but the results are still the same.

Anyone have any idea on what should I do?
Is it a hardware problem? Or there are other ways to connect it to the Arduino to get the data?

You have to wait about (10~15) minutes so the GPS module can connect to the satellites, and If you can take it outside in open area it will be faster.

I tried waiting for 30 mins and the data is still all the way

Latitude : 0.0000000 :: Longitude : 0.0000000
Latitude : 0.0000000 :: Longitude : 0.0000000
Latitude : 0.0000000 :: Longitude : 0.0000000

Latitude : 0.0000000 :: Longitude : 0.0000000
Latitude : 0.0000000 :: Longitude : 0.0000000

The Rx LED on Arduino is not blinking as well..does that means the Arduino is not receiving any data?
The RED LED on the SKM53 is blinking but seems like nothing get to the Arduino.

According to code you mentioned in the link at first comment, using softserial in pin (2,3) which it's Rx Tx respectively for the GPS module. So the RX and TX led of the arduino will not effected.
And for the data, Did you try it outdoor? and can you please show some photos of your circuit and screen shot of the terminal!!

Actually if you have UC00A or UC00B, you can follow the setup in USer's Manual of SKGPS, page 10. With this you can utilize computer program (HyperTerminal or Mini GPS) to display data.

Now, your setup is going through Arduino's software serial and send to computer, there are more possible errors in between GPS module to computer.

If G_TX LED on SKGPS is blinking once a second, it is transmitting data out, but whether the Arduino receive or not will depends on connection and software in Arduino.

Why don't utilize the UART on Arduino UNO and send the data directly to computer? Just to verify the GPS module is sending data. If so, you can narrow down to troubleshoot at other possible area, not the GPS module.

BTW, as highlighted by Ali_Challenger, GPS will require clear sky (outdoor) to get good signal and lock the location. Putting indoor will not help :)

Thanks for the advice...Seems like Open Sky is a very important part...I brought it outdoor before but didn't wait long enough...Just tried bringing it out under the open sky and waited for 5 minutes and the data starts coming in...Appreciate the help a lot...Thank you very much
