I am looking into a type of IR sensor which can sense in few mm.
Can i know which one is suitable for me?

few mm? That is quite small for IR sensor. IR sensor depends a lot of the reflection of Infrared; angle of object, color of object, surface of object, will affect the reflection.

PIR will not give you distance and even object, it senses Passive Infrared, read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_infrared_sensor

mm in resolution, maybe you could check out the high resolution ultrasonic sensor.
