So basically we started out our project using ultrasonic sensors but after a while we realised that it's not effective in detecting humans, particularly the legs since the sensor is positioned low. We concluded that it was probably because of cloth and other soft materials that people wear, so we were wondering what's a good substitute to replace or maybe a stronger ultrasonic sensor?

There are several ways to detect human, ultrasonic cannot really detect human, it can detect obstacle include human, but cannot differentiate between human or other obstacle.

A good way might be PIR sensor or Infrared camera.

so what is your project purpose ? it is easier to finding a sensor that suitable when you state the requirement for your project .
