I used the PICKIT2 for maybe 1 1/2 years, after that, spurious errors increased more and more.
Sometimes I even had trouble connecting to the PICKIT2.
I guess maybe I latched up some transistors. I replaced two of them, but also this was only a short time relief.
Then I bought a PICKIT3.
Ever since then, I never had any problems, connecting to the PICKIT3, updating the OS,
or getting the device ID from the PIC.
It's of course not the best advice when you just bought the PICKIT2, to buy a PICKIT3.
There are clones of the PICKIT2 on eBay, well as for me, it did not work out,
since I normally power circuits using the PICKIT3, sometimes for days.
The PICKIT3 has NTCs built in, and different design.
If you only use external power supply, then maybe also the PICKIT2 is OK.
I just write my experience, I had countless attempts to connect via USB, and also getting just the device ID.
